The Petrified Forest
Our summer began with a trip across county to California. Our first stop was The Petrified Forest. It was amazing seeing the landscape and the layers of the sedimentation in the land-form, The park is divided into two sections the Petrified Forest and the Painted Dessert. We began our journey in the Painted Desert. Within the Painted Dessert were several anthropological sites of ancient Native American villages I was amazed by the Petroglyphs (rock carvings) at Newspaper rock. You can learn more about these historic carvings at this link: https://www.nps.gov/pefo/learn/historyculture/newspaper-rock.htm.
The second part of our days journey was to the Petrified Forest. The forest is the world's largest collection of fossilized wood. The wood is believed to be from the late Triassic Epoch. The sight became a national monument in 1906 in an attempt to preserve the fossils that remained. The land would 50 years later become a national park. Though laws have been made to protect this land the forest continues to be threatened by theft and the need for conservation of this national treasure continues.
